According to state police, Goodson was a passenger in a vehicle driven by 31-year-old Garant Evans of Roselle.

State Police Sgt. Adam Grossman said both men were charged with marijuana possession, possession of drug paraphernalia and weapons offenses stemming from a 45-caliber semi-automatic handgun, that included a hollow-point bullet, found in the vehicle.

Goodson was expected to compete for playing time with Chris Ivory, Bilal Powell and Joe McKnight, and was brought in to be an asset in new offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg's West Coast system because of his speed and ability to catch the ball out of the backfield.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Mark Sanchez understands the New York Jets' starting quarterback job is still up for grabs.

"[...] as you progress in your career, you try and tighten up and hone in," Sanchez said Thursday after voluntary workouts.

Sanchez is approaching this offseason as though he is the starting quarterback, despite his hold on the job being extremely tenuous.

[...] Sanchez appears to have a clear advantage, although the organization is excited about the potential of Smith, the former record-breaking West Virginia quarterback who slid in the draft from a potential top-10 pick all the way to the second round.

Sanchez said Garrard's retirement was "a little bit abrupt," but praised the 35-year-old veteran for "a career to celebrate."

The list includes the likes of Vince Young, JaMarcus Russell, Matt Leinart, Trent Edwards, Byron Leftwich, Charlie Batch — oh, and, Tebow.

Carolina wide receiver Steve Smith said during a radio interview Wednesday that, "I wouldn't let Mark Sanchez throw me a paper bag sandwich."

Mornhinweg said during a conference call with season ticket holders Wednesday that the Jets would have a bona fide quarterback competition.

Sanchez has been working with Mornhinweg and new quarterbacks coach David Lee on cutting down his turnovers, making him throw the ball away in practice rather than forcing a play and making a mistake.

LB Quinton Coples was called out by Ryan last weekend for having a subpar day in the weight room, and the coach wanted to make sure last year's first-round pick knew he was disappointed.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — David Garrard's balky knee kept him from being a serious challenge for the New York Jets' starting quarterback job.

Garrard told SiriusXM NFL Radio on Thursday that his surgically repaired left knee kept swelling up on him after workouts, and that forced him to walk away from the game and consider retirement.

[...] I just kept thinking: 'How am I going to compete for the starting job if every four days I've got to stop and have an ice bag on my knee while the guys are practicing?'

After appearing to be the front-runner ahead of rookie Ryan Tannehill and veteran Matt Moore, the former Jacksonville Jaguars star was cut by the Miami Dolphins last summer after he needed arthroscopic surgery on his knee.

Garrard was expected to be in the mix to compete for the Jets' starting job along with Sanchez and second-round pick Geno Smith.

The New York Jets running back, entering his fourth season, smacked down speculation that he could be the odd man out in the team's crowded backfield.

McKnight was fired up, his lower lip quivering slightly, when he was asked by a reporter if he could soon be out the door since New York, which allowed Shonn Greene to leave as a free agent, has McKnight, Chris Ivory, Mike Goodson, Bilal Powell and John Griffin as running backs on the roster.

McKnight, who has struggled at times to stay on the field with health issues, was nearly a Pro Bowl pick in 2011 as a kick returner.

In three NFL seasons, McKnight has rushed for 502 yards on 112 carries caught 17 passes for 177 yards.

The Jets, looking to upgrade their running game, signed the versatile Goodson and traded for hard-running Ivory this offseason to complement Powell and McKnight.

[...] Garrard, who hadn't played in a regular-season game in the NFL since 2010 because of injuries, is planning to step away because of knee troubles.

In a conference call with season ticket holders earlier in the day, new offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg insisted that the Jets starting QB job is up for grabs — and that included Garrard at the time.

The Jets could look to add another veteran quarterback to the mix, but it appears to solidify Sanchez's spot on the roster.

[...] there was some speculation that New York could take the salary cap hit and eat the contract by releasing Sanchez — or trade him — and let Smith battle Garrard for the job.

Another person familiar with the situation told the AP that the quarterback wanted to have his knee examined either Tuesday or Wednesday morning, so it had clearly been bothering him during offseason workouts.

Garrard signed with Miami in March 2012 and appeared to be the front-runner to be the starter ahead of rookie Ryan Tannehill and veteran Matt Moore, but was released after missing the preseason with a knee issue.
