NEW HAVEN -- For the second straight season, Ansonia junior running back Arkeel Newsome was selected as the state player of the year by the Walter Camp Football Foundation at its high school "Breakfast of Champions" Saturday.
Newsome, who helped lead the Chargers to their second straight 14-0 season and the Class S state title, rushed for 2,245 yards and 38 touchdowns. Other finalists for the award included Xavier senior quarterback Tim Boyle and Daniel Hand senior linebacker Matt Walsh.
Hand, the Class L champion and state's top-ranked team with a 13-0 record, was honored along with the three other state champions -- Xavier (Class LL, 12-1), Hillhouse (Class M, 11-2) and Ansonia (Class S, 14-0).
The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to the family of the late Jack Hunt, former head coach at Ansonia, who won seven state titles during his 19 seasons (193-26 record).
Walter Camp Weekend sponsor Generation UCAN presented the "UCAN Inspire Award," to senior linebacker/offensive tackle George Knoth of Law. This season, George and his teammates raised awareness for autism by wearing a blue puzzle piece decal on their helmets, in particular for George's two younger brothers who are autistic.
Also, the 2012 Walter Camp All-Connecticut Team was announced.
Among the players named were wide receiver/tight end Andrew Matos of Ansonia, offensive linemen Kyle Vaughn of Staples and Michael LaSale of Wilton, defensive back James Frusciante of Staples, kicker Ed Groth of Shelton and returner Thomas Milone of Masuk.
