GLASTONBURY-- Joe Finocchiaro and the Glastonbury girls soccer team remembered their season-ending, state tournament loss to underdog Fairfield Ludlowe in 2010.
But forward Brittany Uricchio -- who wasn't even at Glastonbury High in 2010 -- made sure the Tomahawks didn't fall victim again.
The sophomore scored the game's only goal in the 64th minute as the top-seeded Tomahawks held off No. 16 Ludlowe 1-0 in the Class LL second round on Monday.
"No one wants to lose at this point," Finocchiaro said. "You're basically fighting to play for one more day."
Glastonbury goalkeeper Clara Boucher stopped four shots as the Tomahawks won their 23rd straight game and improved their unbeaten streak to 36 straight.
Glastonbury's last loss was a home defeat to Ludlowe in the second round of 2010's Class LL tournament.
"We remember some of the girls that beat us," Finocchiaro said. "I remember that game and we did this for that 2010 team for sure."
"We knew it was going to be a tough game," Dawson said. "It was just getting the girls mentality to play equally in the second half. I have to give credit to Glastonbury, they're a great team."
The Tomahawks struck mid-way through the second half. After Ludlowe was called for offside, Melissa Andrade's free-kick hit Audrey Spencer in the chest. The junior sent the ball wide to Taylor Walker, who returned it to a cutting Uricchio.
"We talked about trying to get the ball wide," Finocchiaro said.
The junior flicked a right-footed shot past Clarke, breaking the deadlock.
"One miscue in the back cost us," Dawson said. "We didn't step to the ball quickly enough and it was just a beautiful finish."
Ludlowe -- struggling to sustain offensive pressure most of the game -- gained its best chance in the 78th minute, when Emily Matis' corner kick cross sailed right into Boucher's arms.
"We didn't get a lot of chances, offensively," Dawson said. "Would I have liked to have more shots on goal? Absolutely."
Dawson also admitted playing on grass also may have adversely affected her team.
"I think adjusting to the surface took longer than we thought," she said. "It was just slow paced for us."
