STRATFORD -- Three games may not be a big enough sample size to draw serious conclusions about a team, but it's probably enough to get a good indication of what the Bunnell boys basketball team is going to do this season.

The Bulldogs are going to score.

Score a lot.

Saturday afternoon at home against town rival Stratford, Bunnell again broke the 80-point threshold, winning 82-62 in front of a packed gym of nearly 1,100. The game doubled as a fundraiser and memorial for Victoria Soto, a 2003 graduate of Stratford who was among the 26 victims of last week's Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy in Newtown. There was a 26-second moment of silence before the opening tip, and students from both schools wore green shirts in honor of Sandy Hook.

Senior guard Matt Nolting led the Bulldogs with 26 points, putting him within hailing distance of 1,000 for his career.

"We push the ball, we're relentless, we don't let up," Nolting said. "It was big to make a statement. That's what we were out here to do today, to show we can compete."

Perhaps no statement was bigger than the two points that gave the Bulldogs their 79th and 80th, as they came in the form of an emphatic alley-oop from Devon Thompson to impressive junior Issac Vann in the game's final minute.

Vann finished with 22 points, nine rebounds and four blocks.

Sophomore Ryan Pittman added 15 points and Adam Samuel chipped in with 12, giving the Bulldogs at least four players in double-figures in all of their games so far.

"You have to look at that team as one of the best teams in our league, definitely, and probably the area," Stratford coach Paul Dudzinski said. "They have seven guys who can score."

Stratford stayed close through the midway point of the third quarter, thanks to enough scoring from standout senior Bernard Brantley (26 points).

Bunnell pulled away with a furious 14-0 run late in the quarter, capped by a dunk from Vann, giving the Bulldogs a 60-40 lead going into the fourth.

The fourth quarter appeared to be merely academic and a final chance for the large student sections on each side of the gym to trade barbs, but the Red Devils didn't go down quietly. Brantley and Marcus Vereen (12 points) sparked a 14-0 run.

Sam Breiner's 3-pointer with 2:26 left cut the Bunnell advantage to 68-62.

On the next trip down, Nolting powered to the basket, scored and was fouled. He missed the free throw but the Bulldogs got the rebound, with the ball eventually winding up in the hands of Nolting beyond the 3-point line for a basket. Bunnell ended the game on a 14-0 run -- eight points coming from Nolting.

"When they cut it to (six), he took over," Bunnell coach Pat Yerina said. "We like to have that senior step up."

Arron Smith added 10 points for Stratford (1-1), which is still feeling the aftermath of Soto's untimely death.

"It's very emotional for everybody," Dudzinski said. "It's in our hearts. It hurts. All you can try to do is be a little bit better every day in all parts of life."
