Former reporter John J. Gilmore will discuss his new book, "Synopsis of Cocaineros Duel," at 7 p.m. Feb. 1 in the Memorial Room of the Fairfield Public Library.

Synopsis of Cocaineros Duel showcases police detective Frank Reardon as he struggles to rebuild his life while being the only one able to save others. Abandoning Connecticut after failing to capture his wife's murderer, he attempts to get lost in Costa Rica. While there, he is drawn into the rescue of an old girlfriend who has been captured by a drug gang. His war concludes with a dramatic gun battle on the streets of Frank's hometown, Bridgeport.

Gilmore writes fiction based on offbeat people he meets in his travels. He spent many years as a reporter and editor at the former Long Branch Daily Record and Connecticut Post. He has won a number of awards for his short stories, which have been published in Penworks, Vermont Ink and Umbrellastores.com.

In addition to discussing his first novel, Gilmore will share the process of writing a book.
