A free concert for young people featuring Indonesian music and puppetry will be performed Saturday, April 9, at the Pequot Library in Southport.

The 2 p.m. show will feature Wesleyan University's Javanese Orchrestra and a shadow play performed with large, leather puppets by Sumarsam, a Wesleyan music professor who put together the group.

The orchestra is a gamelan -- a music ensemble traditional to the Indonesian islands of Java and Bali. They typically include a variety of instruments such as metallophones (tuned metal bars struck with hammers), xylophones, drums and gongs, bamboo flutes, and bowed and plucked strings.

Sponsors recommend the 50-minute concert for ages 5 to 17. It is presented by Music for Youth and the Pequot Library.
