It was a day for pedestrians and pedalers to put their best feet forward.

Last Friday, Holland Hill School in Fairfield staged Walk/Bike to School Day, encouraging students to make their trips to school either on foot or by bicycle.

It part of an effort by schools across the nation, internationally and right here in town, including Sherman, Osborn Hill and North Stratfield schools, to promote more physical activity and healthy habits for youngsters, as well as calling attention to improving the safety of walking/biking routes.

The school buses ran emptier those days and many local parents got a break from their usual chauffeur duties.

Walk to School Day was established in 1997 and by 2009 a record number of more than 3,300 communities registered their events with www.walktoschool.org.
