BRIDGEPORT -- Police were investigating yet another possible arson Saturday night -- this one injuring a firefighter.
Police sources confirmed detectives were called in to investigate the fire that heavily damaged a vacant 3-story house at 247 Colorado Ave. A firefighter suffered hand injuries battling the blaze and was treated at the scene.
This is the fifth fire linked to arson in the city in less than a week. Blazes on Christmas Eve severely damaged vacant houses on Olive, George, Center and Madison Court in the Hollow section of the city. The body of 28-year-old Omar Chirinos was found in the Madison Court building. His cause of death has not yet been determined.
The vacant Colorado Avenue building is on the city's West Side, and police and fire sources said it is too early to say whether the fire there was the result of arson or if it is connected to the other fires. They did characterize the fire there as suspicious.
The building is owned by the Bridgeport Redevelopment Inc.
Sources said the fire broke out in the basement of the building shortly after 6 p.m. and spread throughout the wood-frame structure, causing heavy damage. At one point, firefighters were ordered to evacuate the burning structure for fear the roof would collapse.
Firefighters, who struggled through snowy conditions to battle the fire, were still putting out hotspots in the building more than two hours later.
