FAIRFIELD -- A driver narrowly escaped injury, but a 2013 Volkswagen was destroyed Sunday afternoon when it burst into flames on an exit ramp along Interstate 95.
The incident occurred in the Southport section of town at around noon, on the exit 19 ramp, which was closed for an hour. Firefighters said there were no injuries.
The driver of the vehicle smelled smoke and pulled off the highway, just in time to escape, said Assistant Fire Chief Scott R. Bisson.
"The driver of the car was very lucky to have been able to safely stop the car and get out without getting burned or injured," Bisson said.
