A group that provides help to abused women and families has planned two events in Fairfield in October to to mark Domestic Violence Awareness month.
A community breakfast and a candlelight vigil are being organized by the Bridgeport-based Center for Women and Families of Eastern Fairfield County.
The breakfast is planned Thursday, Oct. 18, at 8 a.m. in the Fairfield Senior Center, 100 Mona Terr. The event is intended to highlight the center's work helping victims of domestic violence, child abuse and sexual assault, and educating the public about the dangers of bullying, sexting and date rape.
The breakfast is free and open to the public, and no reservation is required.
The candlelight vigil is planned on the Sherman Green at Post and Reef roads on Thursday, Oct. 25 at 6:30 p.m. During the vigil, candles will be lighted to honor domestic-violence victims killed during the last year, the group said.
The center said an incident of domestic violence happens every 15 second in the U.S., and at the vigil, a bell will ring every 15 seconds. The center also said it will encourage men and boys to sign a pledge sheet vowing to never commit, condone or remain silent about domestic abuse and sexual violence.
