The diverse culture and traditions of China were the topic of a Fairfield Public Library presentation Sunday, planned in conjunction with the recent start of the Year of the Horse.

Tracey Zhu, president of the Connecticut Chinese Cultural Association, was the featured speaker, with a multi-media program to highlight 5,000 years of one of the world's oldest civilizations.

Her presentation touched on Chinese philosophies, the erosion of traditional culture and art in the last 60 years, as well as the recent rebirth and celebration of those traditions.

One of the highlights was the Shen Yun dance company, with footage and video of the touring performance group's shows and dance props like long silk ribbon and fans. The dance troupe is scheduled to perform on March 7 and 8 in Waterbury.

Zhu also displayed Tibetan and Xin Jiang ethnic costumes and examples of Chinese calligraphy.
