FAIRFIELD — Police said a Stratford man tried to steal almost $300 worth of chewing gum from the Stop & Shop at 760 Villa Ave. on Sept. 25.

Lee E. Best, 51, of Woodend Road, was charged with sixth-degree larceny in connection with the incident.

According to police, staff at the grocery store called police around 1:30 p.m. to report that Best concealed $298 worth of chewing gum in a plastic trash can and left the store. Officers found Best standing at a nearby bus stop with the trash can and gum.

Best was released on a promise to appear in state Superior Court in Bridgeport on Oct. 7.
