Assault rifle reported stolen
Police are investigating the theft of an AR15 Bushmaster rifle reported from a Fairfield Beach Road home this week.
The weapon, valued at $400, is the same kind of semi-automatic assault rifle used by the gunman in the Newtown school massacre several weeks ago.
The owner, who reported the rifle missing Monday, said it was in a cloth case and had been stored in the garage of his home. He told police he believes it was stolen sometime following Superstorm Sandy. He said the garage was not secure for several weeks after the storm since the house is undergoing major renovations.
Police said there was no permit required for the weapon -- officially classified as a rifle -- under state law.
