The pre-kindergarten class at Assumption Catholic School collected 850 cans of soup for donation to Homes for the Brave, a homeless shelter for veterans in Bridgeport.

"The soup especially helped our residents during the snowstorm when they were stuck inside for four days," Joy Kiss, the shelter's chief executive officer, said in a letter to the students.

Students who brought in cans of soup for the community service project, held from October through Super Bowl Sunday for the seventh year, were allowed to wear jeans on Fridays, instead of their uniforms, according to a news release.
