Bennett "Buddy" Katzen, 85, of Fairfield, died May 7.

Born in Hartford, he was the son of the late Louis and Belle (Jacobs) Katzen. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the 94th Division, here he was a staff sergeant. He was the recipient of a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.

He was the president of Skydel's Department Store in Bridgeport until his retirement in 1990.

A 1950 graduate of the University of Connecticut, he was an ardent supporter of its basketball teams. He also supported Jewish philanthropies and Democratic causes.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Edith (Skydel) Katzen; his daughter, Abby Katzen and her husband Rich Szilvasy of Monroe; three sons, Steven Katzen and his wife Anne Lees of Stratford, David Katzen and his wife Barbara Binder of Providence, R.I., and Jeff Katzen and his wife Donna of Chepachet, R.I.; five grandchildren; Alana and Kaila Katzen, Jeremy Katzen and his wife Sara, Gregory Katzen and Zoe Katzen. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert Katzen.

Services will take place at noon Tuesday May 10, in the Abraham L. Green and Son Funeral Home, 88 Beach Road. Burial will be in Rodeph Sholom Memorial Park on Kings Highway. Shiva will be observed Tuesday and Wednesday at the Katzen residence in Fairfield. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
