Congregation Beth El Fairfield will hold the installation ceremony for Rabbi Marcelo Kormis at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, at the synagogue, 1200 Fairfield Woods Road. A dessert reception will follow the ceremony.

Kormis most recently was associate rabbi of the Circulo Israelita congregation in Santiago, Chile, the largest conservative congregation in the city, Beth El said in a news release.

Chile's national newspaper, El Mercurio, in 2008 named Kormis one of the nation's 100 most influentual leaders, Beth El said.

Kormis grew up in Santiago, and began his rabbinical studies at the Seminario Rabinico in Buenos Aires. He also studied in Israel at Haifa University, the Hebrew University and Machon Schechter.

After his ordination in 2003, Kormis returned to Santiago as head of Judaic studies at the 1,500-student Instituto Hebreo, Chile's main Hebrew day school. Later, he moved to Circulo Israelita as associate rabbi.

The event will be open to the public.
