The annual road races — and more — sponsored by Fairfield-based Bigelow Tea to benefit area charities is planned Sunday.
Bigelow Tea’s 28th annual Community Challenge — consisting of a 5K road race, 2-mile fitness walk and kids' fun run — will be based at the Wakeman Boys & Girls Club on Center Street in the Southport section of town. Events start at 9 a.m., rain or shine.
More than 1,000 people are expected to participate, with proceeds from registration fees benefiting charities. Last year, $130,000 was donated to 18 local charities, according to Bigelow publicity for the event.
The registration fee includes chip-timed races, a free tee-shirt and gift bag.
There also will be food, music, children’s activities and Bigelow’s mobile tea bar at the Wakeman Club. Staff-supervised babysitting will be available.
