O' say can you see -- by the day's gloomy light -- that Southporters were undeterred by sporadic showers Friday in rolling out the annual July 4 bike parade and games on the Great Lawn at the Pequot Library.

Red, white and blue headgear, streamers, American flags and other July 4-appropriate decor unfurled along Pequot Avenue through Southport Village for the traditional neighborhood salute to Independence Day.

Once the panoply of bicyclists, tricyclists, wagon-ists and walkers arrived at the library, features of the event included old-fashioned holiday fun like tug-of-war, badminton, patriotic crafts-making, facepainting, chalk drawing and hot dogs from the Super Duper Weenie truck.

The event also was supported by the Southport Volunteer Fire Department, which was on hand with its trucks for youngsters to check out.
