Author Joan Bauer will discuss her new children's novel, "Almost Home," at the downtown Fairfield University Bookstore on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 15.

Bauer is scheduled to appear from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on the second floor of the 1499 Post Road shop, the bookstore said in a news release.

The story's narrator is a 12-year-old girl named Sugar. After her grandfather dies and her gambling father deserts them, Sugar and her mother lose their home in Missouri and go to Chicago hoping for a fresh start. But they find fresh starts are not so easy for the homeless.

Sugar ultimately comes to understand that while she can't control the hand life deals her, she can control how she responds.

"Almost Home" is appropriate for children who are 10 or in grade five and up.
