The weather was bitterly cold Sunday evening, but holiday warmth was in the air as neighbors gathered for the lighting of the Christmas tree on Mill Plain Green.

Among those on hand for the ceremony was First Selectman Michael Tetreau and Fire Commission member Dorothea Brennan.

Charles Case, president of the Mill Plain Improvement Society, led the ceremony, while Bryan LeClerc, a past president of the group who had helped plant the tree in his youth, was selected to throw the switch.

After the tree was lighted, the group was invited inside the historic Jonathan Sturges "Cottage" next to the green, where 97-year-old Mary Rousseau, the great-granddaughter of the home's namesake, welcomed them for a holiday celebration. Rousseau provided a spread of food, beverages and entertainment by a quartet of Fairfield Ludlowe High School student musicians.
