The gray skies were threatening, the temperatures cool Saturday morning — a far from perfect start for a summer weekend, except for the 1,500 runners who hit the course for the the Faxon Law Group Fairfield 5K Race .

The 5K event — the run-up to Sunday’s Fairfield Half Marathon — was won by Nicholas Blanchard, 20, of the upstate town of Portland, who crossed the Jennings Beach finish line first among all runners with a time of 15:58.

Locals lined the 5K course through the town’s shoreline neighborhoods, cheering and handing out water for runners, with some musical notes along the way.

The second-place finisher was Timothy Milenkevich, 33, of Ansonia, with a time of 16:18. Luke McCambley, 25, of Westport, took third with 16:31.

Among the women runners, Liz Campbell, 24, of Stamford, placed first with a time of 17:53. Second place went to Katelynn Romanchick, 16, of Trumbull, at 19:26, and Julie McElroy, 48, of Sleepy Hollow, NY, captured third at 19:34.

Runners, joined by friends and families, gathered on Jennings Beach post race for awards, music, food and exhibitors providing services and giveaways.
