Cops: Driver who careened off road and hit pole was drunk

A 39-year-old man faces charges after he drove off the road, hit a utility pole on Westport Turnpike and wound up in a stream just before 6 p.m. Thursday, police said.

Benjamin Brower, of Winding Brook Road, Monroe, was charged with driving under the influence and failure to drive right.

According to a witness, Brower crossed over the double-yellow line on Westport Turnpike numerous times over a 5-mile stretch. police said. The witness also told police that Brower's driving "scared the (expletive deleted) out of me."

Brower's car left the road near Treasure Road, and traveled off road about 65 feet before striking a utility pole, according to the report. The car then spun around and went down an embankment, and coming to rest with its front wheels in a stream.

Police said Brower's speech was slurred and he was confused about why he was being arrested.

He was released on a $100 bond and is scheduled to appear June 3 in Bridgeport Superior Court.
