Cops: Man found asleep behind wheel on Commerce Drive had heroin

A 40-year-old driver was arrested Saturday after officers found a man asleep behind the wheel of a stopped car near Commerce Drive and Fiske Street, and then found heroin in the vehicle, police said.
Thomas C. Obst, of Millbrook Road, Monroe, was charged with possession of narcotics and driving under the influence about 3:40 p.m. Saturday.
On the narcotics charge, he was released on $5,000 bond and was scheduled to appear March 27 in Bridgeport Superior Court . On the DUI charge, he was released after posting $100 bond and was also scheduled to appear March 27 in court.
Obst was asleep behind the wheel while his car had stopped in the travel lane of busy Commerce Drive, according to the report. Officers found a plastic bag of heroin, totaling 5.8 grams, underneath the emergency brake, police said, and also that Obst failed field sobriety tests.
The officers who investigated the stopped car were assigned to a DUI patrol, police said.
