A 35-year-old Bridgeport man faces charges after police said he shoplifted merchandise from Walgreen's on Villa Avenue, then sped off and led police on a chase during which he hit several vehicles, including a police cruiser, just after midnight Thursday.
Mark Goncalves, of Alice Street, Bridgeport, was charged with engaging in pursuit, reckless driving, interfering with an officer, sixth-degree larceny, misuse of plates, operating an unregistered vehicle and no insurance. He was held on a $2,000 bond.
The incident unfolded when Goncalves concealed $143 worth of merchandise from Walgreen's, 740 Villa Ave., under his coat and left the store without paying, police said. He got into a green Honda Accord and refused to stop when signaled to halt by police, striking several cars in the parking lot before leaving. On nearby Moody Avenue, police said, Goncalves accelerated his and hit the right front of a police cruiser, and then leapt from the car and fled on foot.
Three officers chased Goncalves into the backyard of a Lynnbrook Road home, where he was taken into custody.
