Three young women, apparently celebrating their recent college graduation with a bonfire at the beach by torching furniture from their rental house early Thursday, now face charges.

Police first received a complaint shortly before 1 a.m. Thursday about a loud party, followed a short time later by a call about the bonfire. When officers arrived, they learned the trio had intentionally started a fire by dousing unwanted furniture with gasoline and lighting it on fire. They told police they were burning furniture they were not planning to take with them.

Charged with breach of peace and reckless burning were Gina Hawley, 22, of Mead Farm Road in Seymour; Georgia Tiftikidis, 21, of Chincoteague, Va., and Emily O'Connor, 21, of Hollister, Mass.

All three were released after posting a $300 bond and they are scheduled to appear June 10 in Bridgeport Superior Court.
