The clouds cleared, the tide ebbed and the sun popped out Sunday afternoon, as perfect conditions washed over Penfield Beach for the Fairfield Police Athletic League's annual Sand Sculpture Contest.
More than two dozen groups registered for the event, which was co-sponsored by the Fairfield Beach Residents Association. Registrants were encouraged fashion a sculpture in tribute to the town's 375th anniversary.
Prizes were awarded by judges in categories for the Best 375th Anniversary Sculpture, Most Artistic and Most Realistic.
Among the sandy creations were a sea turtle, Fairfield landmarks, an anchor, a crab, a sailboat, propeller plane, seahorse, fisherman, stingray and birthday cake.
The sculptors -- as well as many general beachgoers -- were treated to a slice of 375th Birthday cake donated by FBRA after the contest.
