A balmy evening, with a light breeze and pink glowing sky made for a naturally mellow showcase Thursday as the Uptown Jazz Band swung into a concert on Sherman Green.

Presented by Fairfield's Parks and Recreation Department, the event attracted a park full of people to enjoy the free music.

The Baker family of Westport was among those drawn to the downtown setting by the melodies. "We were just passing by, heard the music and wanted to sit down and enjoy it," said Roma Baker, sitting on the grass near the downtown gazebo. "It's the perfect end to the day my daughter said."

"I'm a big jazz enthusiast, of greats like Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington," said Fairfielder Rosemarie Cito. "And this is a good way for us to celebrate our 50th anniversary year," she added, nodding to her husband Jerry.
