A series of adaptive dance classes for special-needs children of all ages begins in September at Giant Steps School in Southport. In its second year, the "Next Steps" program includes 13 Saturday afternoon dance classes in the school's gym.

The program culminates with the opportunity for all participants to perform routines they've learned in a staged production with the New England Ballet Co.

Classes are 2 to 3 p.m. on Saturdays, beginning Sept. 8, and are for boys and girls of all abilities. The program's goal, Giant Steps said, is to stimulate and engage students in the creative process, following a structured format teaching basic poses and skills based on ballet and modern dance. It includes elements of socialization, imagination, imitation and communication.

Cost is $150. Giant Steps is at 309 Barberry Road.
