Philip J. Dwyer, chairman of the Fairfield Board of Education, was honored Sunday by the Democratic Town Committe.

Dwyer was presented the John J. Sullivan Public Service Award, given annually to a Democrat whom the DTC said has served the party and community "with distinction encompassing community service and sustained political activity and leadership."

A retired YMCA executive elected to the school board in 2011, Dwyer was honored at a reception at the Fairfield Museum and History Center.

The award is named in honor of the late Democratic first selecman who held that position longer than any other of the town's chief executives.
