Diet-related health talks at senior center

A naturopathic physician will give two free diet-related health lectures in December at the Fairfield Senior Center.
Dr. Veronica Waks will give the presentation "You Are What You Eat ... Nutrition 101" on Thursday, Dec. 6 from 10:30 to 11: 30 a.m. The senior center said it will cover how food is absorbed and used by cells, food structure, proteins, fats, carbohydrates and basic food groups.
The talk is a nutrition primer for understanding other important health issues such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, weight reduction, cancer prevention, osteoporosis and allergies, the senior center said.
Waks will discuss cholesterol on Monday, Dec. 17, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The talk will include an explanation of what cholesterol is, how dietary sources of it and how the body produces it, the senior center said.
The talks will include high cholesterol, LDL, HDL, homocysteine, C-reactive protein and other markers of cholesterol.
Waks also will explain how serum cholesterol can be reduced why she believes it is better to lower one's serum cholesterol using specific foods, nutritional supplements and exercise, the senior center said.
