A driver who told police he woke up in a parking lot this morning and didn't know where he was, crashed into a telephone pole at the corner of Black Rock Turnpike and Knapps Highway -- winding up in the hospital for treatment of his injuries and tying up rush-hour traffic.
Witnesses called 911 to report the accident around 7:30 a.m. They told police the driver of a red Nissan -- not immediately identified by police -- was stopped at a red traffic light behind another car. When the light turned green, the first car proceeded, but the second driver did not. When another motorist beeped a horn, the driver of the Nissan lurched forward and drove directly into the utility police.
Officers arrived to find the driver lying on the ground outside the car's open door. He told them he had been to Toad's Place in New Haven the night before and left around midnight. He said he woke up Friday morning in a parking lot, not knowing where he was, and then realized he was late for work.
According to the report, police detected an odor of alcohol. The driver, who lives on Wood Avenue in Bridgeport, said he believes he was "going a bit too fast."
