Republican John Donovan, a financial-services professional and political newcomer, has announced his candidacy for Representative Town Meeting in the First District.

He will seek nomination in the July 23 GOP caucus on what he called a "smart-spending" platform.

In a news release, Donovan said his priorities are holding tax growth to inflation; promoting transparency and accountability for town spending priorities; keeping the "Southport and Fairfield Beach area great;" and preserving Pequot Library.

Donovan said he worked for MasterCard for 17 years and then helped start lendingclub.com, an online investment and personal-loan firm. He has lived in Fairfield 10 years and has children in the public schools system.
