A resident of Avalon Court housing complex off Old Post Road was charged Thursday night with drunken driving after police said he struck a stone wall as he was turning into the development.
A nearby resident reported to police shortly after 11 p.m. Thursday that a car had struck either a stone wall or a tree along Old Post Road. Upon arriving at the scene, an officer saw a car resting against the wall and the driver, David Tanis, 21, and his passenger standing near the car.
Tanis told the officer he hit the wall after losing control of his eastbound car in an effort to avoid hitting an approaching car as he turned into Avalon Court. The stone wall and an adjacent fence were damaged by the collision.
Tanis, who said he drank some wine earlier in the night, failed a field sobriety test and a breath test revealed his blood alcohol content level was over the legal limit, police said. He and his passenger suffered minor injuries as a result of the accident but refused transport to Bridgeport Hospital, police said.
Tanis, who was charged with driving while intoxicated and failure to drive right, posted a $100 bond and is scheduled to appear June 11 in Bridgeport Superior Court.
