The driver of an SUV that flipped over Friday morning on the Merritt Parkway had to extricated from the wreck, shutting down the busy highway for about an hour.

The single-vehicle crash took place shortly after 9:15 a.m. Friday between the parkway's southbound Exits 44 and 42 near the Westport/Fairfield border, and firefighters from both towns were dispatched to the scene.

The driver -- the lone occupant of the SUV -- had to cut from the vehicle and was transported to Norwalk Hospital.

The highway's southbound lanes were shut down for about an hour during the emergency operations.
