The driver of an 18-wheel tractor-trailer truck that tumbled off Interstate 95 and rolled down an embankment next to Meadow Street amid heavy rain Wednesday, was hospitalized after being extricated from the truck cab.

The driver, according to firefighters, was responsive in the aftermath of the accident about 6:45 a.m. Wednesday. He was transported to St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, but his condition was not immediately available.

The truck was traveling north when it apparently jack-knifed during a downpour and flipped down the embankment, landing on Meadow Street near the Edge gym and trapping the driver inside the cab.

The truck tore down nearby power lines and transformers, disrupting electric service in the immediate area.

The truck was hauled from the scene by heavy-duty wreckers and the scene was cleared about 10 a.m.

The crash is being investigated by State Police.
