There are some things that boys are just naturally driven to. Skateboards, for instance, and spy equipment and anything that's radio-controlled. And, as I learned this week, a good burger.

Forget Zagat's and every food blog out there. If you want to know where to find the best hamburger, talk to a boy. Someone, for instance, like Will Siverson, an 8-year-old Fairfield resident.

"A good cheeseburger shouldn't be too juicy and the cheese shouldn't be too melted," he said. "The bun shouldn't be too crunchy and it shouldn't be too tall. If it's too tall," he said, "you don't get a bite of the actual burger."

A self-professed cheeseburger aficionado, Will is very particular about the kind of cheese that gets placed on the patty. "Most places just have American," he said.

At Fairfield's Flipside Burgers & Bar, you have a choice of six different cheeses: jack, gorgonzola, baby Swiss, cheddar, provolone or American. But that's the exception, not the rule. "Not a lot of places have cheddar," said Will, talking about the cheese he loves the most.

For this feature, Will enjoyed a cheeseburger and fries off the kids' menu at The Angus on Blackrock Turnpike in Fairfield. He always takes his cheeseburgers plain -- no lettuce or tomato, not even any ketchup. Just a plain cheeseburger on a bun.

Some of Will's other favorite eateries include Shake Shack in Westport and Five Guys Burgers and Fries, which has several outlets in the region, even though they only offer American cheese.

Twelve-year-old Quinn Sandor, a Norwalk resident, agreed with Will in his cheeseburger critique. On a scale of 1 to 10, Sandor gives the burgers at Five Guys a 10 and Shake Shack an 8. "I like Five Guys because I can customize it and they won't mess it up," he said. His favorite combination is a burger with lettuce, tomato, barbeque sauce, ketchup and cheese. "A great burger should be tasty, juicy and mouth-watering," he said.

Yet, despite the number of local places that count burgers as their specialty, Will said he ate the best cheeseburger of his life at the Firehouse Deli in Fairfield. "We parked across the street," he said, "and I ate the entire cheeseburger before we even got back to the car."

As for Quinn, his mother Alexandra said she doesn't think he'd know a bad burger if it bit him. "He even likes the school cafeteria burgers," she said.
