An 89-year-old man was scheduled to have surgery Monday for injuries he suffered when he was hit by a car Saturday morning on Burroughs Road.

The man was crossing Burroughs Road about 9:45 a.m. Saturday, headed to McDonald's for his breakfast on his birthday, police said.

The driver of the car -- a 61-year-old Fairfield resident who was not identified as of Monday -- failed to stop and had to be chased by a witness, according to the report. She told police she thought she had hit the curb.

Charges are pending against the driver, police said.

According to the report, she was traveling west on Burroughs Road and crossed through the Black Rock Turnpike intersection when she struck the man, who police said was about 4 feet from reaching the sidewalk on the other side. When the driver did not stop, a witness in another car began to follow her, blowing the horn, until the driver pulled over near Judd Street.

The victim was taken to St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport for treatment of a broken leg, pelvis, shoulder and lower back. Police said it had not begun to rain at the time of the accident.
