Fairfield Theatre Company will have a free Back Lot BBQ celebrating the first year of music education for Bridgeport music students from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 30, at StageOne, 70 Sanford St. Doors open at 11:30 a.m.
The event will include a barbecue with picnic tables and beverages, as well as music by students and teachers from the FTC Saturday Kids program, according to a company news release.
Musical guests will include Rick Reyes, lead guitarist and singer of the local Latin band Cosmic Jibaros, and Brother Kojo Bey, a master drummer from Sounds of Afrika, who will run a drum circle open to all ages and levels.
African drums and instruments will be provided to participants who are unable to bring their own.
The event also will offer an opportunity to take a behind-the-scenes look at StageOne and photos and videos of past acts.
Since September 2011, the company, in partnership with Kids Empowered by Your Support of Bridgeport, has provided one-to-one piano instruction for students ages 6 to 16 from Bridgeport public, elementary and middle schools. In addition, seniors from area high schools have volunteered their time on Saturdays to work with the students.
