The Fairfield Chamber of Commerce honored a pair of community leaders during its annual meeting and awards reception last week at Fairfield University.

The chamber presented its Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award to the Rev. Charles Allen, Fairfield University's alumni chaplain and special assistant to the president, at the June 26 event.

George Szondy, president and CEO of Abbey Tent and Party Rental, received the chamber's Corporate Citizen of the Year Award.

During the group's 68th annual meeting at the university's Dolan School of Business, chamber Executive Director Beverly Balaz told attendees that the chamber had enrolled 67 new members in the past 12 months.

"This is a historic figure," she said in a news release.

Chamber members and guests heard an assessment of the local economy presented by Chris Bruhl, president and CEO of the Business Council of Fairfield.
