Fairfield College Preparatory School recently recognized Bill Evans, Class of 1973, as the third recipient of the St. Ignatius of Loyola Alumni Award.

The award was established in 2010 to recognize alumni who exemplify characteristics the school seeks to instill in its graduates, "specifically open to growth, intellectually competent, religious loving and committed to doing justice," according to a news release.

Evans, of Westport, is president of Connecticut Quest for Peace, a humanitarian relief organization to poverty-stricken Nicaraguan communities, the release states. The agency sends needed supplies, supports nutrition programs, has started scholarship programs and contributes to loan programs.

Evans, a Stamford native, travels to Nicaragua twice a year to interact with the local communities and organizations, identify new areas of need and make plans to distribute aid and resources.

Evans, one of seven children whose three brothers also attended Fairfield Prep, holds a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He runs William Evans Painting, a painting business he and his brothers started to help pay their tuitions to Prep and college.

Evans is scheduled to receive his award at the schoolwide Mass of the Holy Spirit on Friday, Sept. 7.
