A proposed addition to Fairfield College Preparatory School got high marks Tuesday from the Town Plan and Zoning Commission, which gave unanimous approval to the project.

"It's really an attractive mix of modern and gothic," said Commissioner James Kennelly.

The expansion will add space to the cafeteria, rooms for student activities and a fitness room.

"This is one I can wholeheartedly support," said Commissioner Richard Jacobs. "They are doing a really good job on the environmental side."

Jacobs said the addition will not be seen from anyone who is not actually on the campus that Prep shares with Fairfield University. "I see this as a win for everyone," he said.

According to John Fallon, the lawyer who represented the school, the expansion is necessary to accommodate the all-boys' school current enrollment. There are no plans, he said, to increase enrollment.

There are several environmentally sensitive "green" elements to the design, he said, including a grass roof over the cafeteria addition.
