The Fairfield Senior Center has been renamed the Bigelow Center for Senior Activities by town officials in recognition of support for the center by Fairfield-based Bigelow Tea.

The name change for the Mona Terrace center, effective July 1, recently won unanimous approval from the Board of Selectmen.

In a statement announcing the name change, First Selectman Michael Tetreau thanked Cindi Bigelow, the president and CEO of Bigelow Tea, “and the Bigelow family for their tireless efforts and the goodwill they graciously offer to our senior center and to the community at large.”

Bigelow, in response, said: “I will cherish this outstanding gesture for the rest of my life.”

For nearly three decades, according to senior center officials, Bigelow Tea has supported the center with a range of donations that include a low-vision magnifying reading machine for people with vision problems, exercise equipment, furnishings, raffle prizes for the annual volunteer luncheon and the software for MySeniorCenter, which helps the staff study member activities and participation in more than 50 programs. This data helps staff to identify successful programs and improve efficiency of resource management, officials said..

A dedication ceremony to unveil the new Bigelow Center sign is planned at 10 a.m. July 31. The Bigelow family, senior center members and staff, and local and state officials are expected to attend. Those interested in attending should call 203-256-3166 Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

The center at 100 Mona Terrace is handicapped accessible. Free parking is available. Transportation is available to Fairfield residents by calling 203-256-3168.
