The annual Sidewalk Sales event in the downtown business district, showcasing bargains at more than 50 merchants, is set for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event, planned rain or shine, will also feature musical and theater performances, games for children and special menus at participating restaurants.

A number of stores plan to offer a preview of sales merchandise beginning Thursday.

Merchants in Southport Village also plan to take part in conjunction with the Pequot Library's 54th annual Summer Book Sale, which will be taking place from Friday through Tuesday of next week.

The downtown sales district will encompass merchants along the Post Road, from Heritage Square on the west to the Brick Walk commercial complex on the east. The event is being organized by the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce and the town.

Activities for children and families will be offered on Sherman Green, including an inflatable bouncy house, face painting and balloon art, and visits by team mascots.

Members of the Fairfield Teen Theatre Co. will perform a preview of their production of "Shrek, the Musical."

Music will be performed at several venues around downtown from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., including the Brick Walk, Sherman Green, the Fairfield University Bookstore and in front of the Community Theater.

Free parking is available at the Fairfield Center and the Southport train stations for the respective shopping districts.
