A Fairfield University student, charged with raping a female student last year, bragged to friends after the alleged incident that he had done "the nasty tonight" with a freshman girl, police said.

"She didn't want to lose her virginity until she was in love ha ha," police said Joshua Delvecchio texted a friend.

During a Tuesday appearance at Superior Court in Bridgeport, Delvecchio pleaded not guilty to first-degree sexual assault, first-degree unlawful restraint and third-degree assault. Delvecchio, of Randi Drive in Madison, stood beside his lawyer, William Dow, in court and chose a trial before a jury.

"He entered a plea of not guilty and that speaks for itself," Dow said as he and Delvecchio left the courtroom. "History tells us accusations are easily made, but not easily proven."

Judge John Kavanewsky Jr. continued the case to Feb. 25. Delvecchio is free on $50,000 bond.

Last Oct. 18, the 18-year-old female student was attending a party on campus where she met Delvecchio, police said. The two went back to the girl's dorm room where, police said, they started kissing, but the victim warned Delvecchio she was a virgin and did not intend to have sex with him. However, police said, Delvecchio then held her down and raped her.

Police said the female student later sent texted friends to say that she had been raped and went to the campus health center, where campus security officers were contacted. Her parents spent the next night in the young woman's dorm room where, police said, they were awakened about 1:30 a.m. by Delvecchio banging on the door.

Police said some of Delvecchio's friends told detectives that Delvecchio had bragged to them about having sex with a freshman girl while they were having breakfast with him the morning after the incident, and that he sent them numerous texts describing the incident.

Delvecchio, however, maintained the sex had been consensual, according to police.
