Two Fairfield Warde High School students injured Friday during a baseball game at Trumbull High School when bleachers collapsed -- causing about 50 spectators to tumble to the ground -- appear to be on the mend, Superintendent of Schools David Title said Monday.
The collapse occurred during a Class LL semifinal baseball game between Warde and Trumbull, which Warde won 5-1 after play resumed.
One Warde student was treated at the scene, Title said, the other was treated and released from the hospital with minor injuries.
Warde fans were on the portable metal bleachers, chanting, "I believe, we will win!" when the stands gave way in the fifth inning.
"Kids were jumping up and down and chanting," said Warde baseball coach Mark Caron. "That's what caused it to collapse."
The game stopped as parents rushed to the scene and an ambulance arrived.
Title, who was at the game, said he was impressed with the reaction of the Trumbull staff, police and EMT workers to the emergency.
"Several of us from Fairfield also assisted. We are indeed fortunate that the number and severity of the injuries was not more extensive," Title said
