Sofer and the other doctors traveled to Morocco, where they performed about 175 surgeries on both adults and children, correcting cleft lips, cleft palates and other impairments.
Operation Smile was founded in 1982 and has performed more than 220,000 free surgeries in more than 60 countries around the world.
Sofer, according to a statement issued about the medical mission, was pleased to join Operation Smile to provide underprivileged children and adults with a chance to live without the health issues and social stigmas often associated deformities.
Operation Smile also helps train and educate local doctors so they can continue to provide medical treatment to their communities, and establish as many permanent care centers as possible.
Sofer said he understands how having undesirable facial features can have a negative impact on a person’s self esteem, the press release states. He practices both surgical and non-surgical procedures, and is double board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery.
