Jack Powers, a poet from Fairfield, recently won the Connecticut Poetry Society's 2012 Connecticut River Review Poetry Contest with his poem "Counting."

His poem was described by the judge Jeff Mock as "an intelligent, moving meditation on celebrity and the misspent life and also on the glory of simply living, whether we spend our days well or not," according to a release.

Mock is a professor in the master of fine arts program at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven. He also teaches special education and English at Joel Barlow High School in Redding.
