Greenfield Hill Congregational Church will honor the Rev. Dr. Alida Ward for her 25 years of service as pastor on Sunday, June 1.

The church community plans a special worship service at 9 a.m., with a picnic lunch immediately following on the church green, 1045 Old Academy Road. The event will launch a three-part celebration that will continue into the fall.

Ward began her tenure at Greenfield Hill church in 1989 following her graduation from Yale Divinity School. She is the third-longest serving pastor in the church's nearly 300-year history.

A native of Providence, R.I., she grew up in Charlottesville, Va., and graduated magna cum laude from Bryn Mawr College with a bachelor's degree in religion. She holds a master's of divinity degree from Yale and received a doctorate in ministry from Princeton Theological Seminary in 2000.

Ward has served twice as the president of the board of directors of Operation Hope, and was appointed last year to Fairfield's Human Services Commission. She also is a member of the Fairfield Cares Community Coalition, the Storm Sandy Recovery Committee and the Fairfield Advisory Committee for the Center for Family Justice.

She is also actively involved in the church's youth ministry, which culminates each year with a mission trip to Appalachia. This summer's trip will involve 225 participants. Ward is also vice president of Friends of Christ in India, and leads an annual mission team to India. Ward is married to the Rev. Dr. David Rowe, co-pastor of Greenfield Hill Church.
