Fairfield public school officials have been planning to start the new academic year on Thursday, but with thousands of homes still without power -- 48 percent of the town as of early Tuesday -- they are waiting until later today to decide what day the opening bells would ring.

A decision on the first day of school will be posted at 4 p.m. today on the district's website: www.fairfieldschools.org

This year, more than 10,000 students are enrolled in the Fairfield public schools, and the district has about 950 teachers and administrators.
