Employees at the Super Stop & Shop on Villa Avenue chased and took down a man who allegedly stole the purse of an 85-year-old woman at the store Thursday night.
David Gonzalez, Jr., 23, of Gurdon Street in Bridgeport, knocked the victim to the ground about 10:30 p.m., grabbed her purse and fled on foot, police said. Employees at the store called police and chased the suspect.
Gonzalez ran into the Soap Box, a nearby laundromat across Tunxis Hill Road. The manager there said he took off his gray sweatshirt and put it in one of the washing machines, but did not start the machine.
Gonzalez then went outside and took a black jacket from a clothing collection bin in the laundromat's parking lot. At this point, the Stop & Shop employees spotted him and chased him. This time, the store employees were able to catch up with him in a parking lot on Tunxis Hill Road, police said.
One of the grocery store employees went back to the laundromat and explained what had happened to the manager there, who retrieved the sweatshirt from the washing machine. The victim's purse was found in a dumpster and turned over to police.
Gonzalez was charged with third-degree robbery and third-degree assault on a person over 60. He was held on a $25,000 bond and is scheduled to appear May 3 in Bridgeport Superior Court.
